I drove by myself for the first time today and I didn't die.

Yep. I’m officially 16 and a licensed driver. Because I didn’t have to go to 2nd class, I used that time to go to the DMV and do the whole process. I then drove to school solo for 3rd block, and drove home solo. Because I stayed for math tutoring until 3:20, I have yet to experience the horror that is my high school parking lot from 2:30-2:40.

It was a tad scary anyway, mainly because I’m out in the open world alone.

Unrelated lead pic.

Lucky! I can’t drive solo up here...yet. I have to wait to get my G2.

That has to suck waiting so long, in South Dakota we can drive legally without an adult at 14.

Seriously? At 14 I would turn that offer down anyday. Maybe I’m just used to 16, as it is in many states.

But 14?

It has to do with SD being an agricultural state. The farmers/ranchers need their kids to be able to legally drive trucks, tractors or whatever as soon as possible to help out on the farm.

I remeber my first time driving on the asphalt. 2am in a new to me car, 300 miles of highway, and without legal thing of course.

Congrats! Drive save out there. Watch your following distance and be very wary of intersections. Those two issues were my biggest stumbling blocks. I only just began *really* training myself to follow at 2-5 car lengths depending on the speed and I’m 22! I’ve never rear ended anyone but I’ve come WAY too close. Going too fast through an intersection, however, has indeed fucked me over before. I had the right of way, but a Tiguan slammed into me. I could have avoided her if I was going slower/paying attention. Fortunately, the police witnessed the incident and she was ticketed!

It was the same way in NM when I was growing up. Bought my first car - A beat up old Camaro - at 14 using my own cash. It was widely regarded as a “bad move” and the law was moved up to 16 a year after I got my license :)

Yes, the following distances and intersections are the two main horrors cautions of mine as well.

I was driving a school bus at age 17. In 1981. There’s a word problem for your math tutor.

What math class are you finishing?

If your birthday had yet to pass in 1981, and it has yet to pass now, you are 51.

My first solo drive was to swim practice at 5:30 in the morning. I am kind of sad that I will never be able to recreate or relive that glorious feeling.

At least it was glorious. Mine was slightly scary. March 28 though, first time driving the Challenger, that was the un-recreatable glorious event for me.

Other feeling I can never recreate: Having my dad tell me, “Sorry pal, that A8 sold” on the way home from school, then him pulling in to the driveway, opening the garage, and having it be slowly revealed before my eyes.

He thinks he’s so funny.
